We appreciate the efforts of the sponsors of Tour de Gulch XII – Boone Dog Bikes, Fort George Brewery, and the Bike Garage. Please support them in any way you can.

Boone Dog Bikes has been a TDG sponsor since 2004. Jason Moon carries a compehensive product line that includes Chris King, Shimano, SRAM, Thomson, FSA, WTB, Kenda, Intense, Rockshox, SKS USA, Truvativ, Maxxis, Avid, Hayes, Kool Stop, Marzocchi, Park Tool, and more. BDB also carries complete bikes by Brodie, Santa Cruz, and Niner and frames from Foes Racing, Arrow Racing, On One, and Orange Mountain Biking.

Currently, Boone Dog Bikes is open from 12 to 6 on Saturdays at 1331 14th Avenue in Longview. Jason also works from his home in the evenings and on weekends.

An avid downhiller, Moon was the 2006 Mount Hood Ski Bowl Champion in the expert division. He moved up to the semi-pro classification and finished second in 2007.

After skipping the 2008 race season, Jason returned to DH racing in 2009 and won the Fluidride Expert 40+ DH at Port Angeles in May.

Jason says he works hard to develop a niche among area mountain bikers by getting out on trail on a regular basis and by paying attention to what bikers need. “They know I ride. I test what I sell, and that helps me understand what parts are going to work best for particular people.”

The Bike Garage opened for business in 2008. Located at 13th & Duane Street in Astoria , the shop is open from 10 to 6, Thursday through Monday. On Sundays, they open at noon.

bike_garageThe Bike Garage stocks Kona and Felt bikes and has several Breezers on hand. Owner Kris Daehler also brings in Surly and Santa Cruz on occasion and is always happy to look into other niche brands.

“We also carry used bikes, and I like having consignment bikes on hand,” Kris said. “We’re always looking for used bikes to sell, so anyone looking to clear out their basement should stop on by.”

All brands of bikes are serviced. “I hope to provide a hub where cyclists of every persuasion feel comfortable and well attended to,” Kris said. “I have a growing stock of carefully selected parts and accessories to choose from. But we’re still a small shop, so I place multiple special orders per week to provide folks with the parts they need.”

The Bike Garage will soon be running a fleet of pedicabs through downtown Astoria. Additional projects involving bike transportation are in the works, such as a “yellow bike” style bike-share program.  Kris hopes to be a resource for trail builders in the community and promises to support new cycling events in the Astoria area, as well.

Fort George Brewery is supplying 15 gallons of premium brew for TDG 2009, five gallons each of Vortex IPA, Cavatica Stout, and their new Spruce Bud Ale.

Fort George Brewery opened in Astoria in March 2007. Co-owners Chris Nemlowill and Jack Harris have quickly established a reputation for producing excellent beer and created a watering hole that has become an essential part of the local scene.

fireshot-capture-8-fort-george-brewery-public-house-fortgeorgebrewery_com“Our focus is on building a sense of community,” Nemlowill said. “We want to create a place where everyone feels comfortable – including families – and we want to be involved in what’s going on here.”

One measure of a brewery is the consistency of its taster tray. From light to dark, Fort George’s brews hold up. Harris and Nemlowill always have at least six of their own beers on tap, along with a one-of-a-kind Fort George specialty batch and a handful of guest beers from other craft brewers.

Vortex IPA (7.4 percent ABV and 97 IBUs) is the best-seller. A big, citrusy IPA in the West Coast tradition, Vortex is packed with taste delivered by five hop varieties.

“Hoppy beers just continue to increase in popularity,” Nemlowill said. “They’re complex and extremely flavorful.”

Other standards include Cavatica, a smooth, black stout (8.8 percent ABV); Nut Red Ale, a rich, scarlet ale that relies on a blend of specialty malts; Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale, a mellow, dry-hopped ale that is Harris’ favorite; Quick Wit, an unfiltered Belgian; and Golden Goose, a light-but-flavorful golden ale that is the latest addition.

The brewery is located at 1483 Duane Street in the Fort George Building, which was constructed in 1924 and was home to a Ford dealership until the late 1990s. When Nemlowill and Harris renovated the building, they created a comfortable, open pub that features wooden tables and hand-carved wooden benches. But the real eye-catchers are the old-growth, Douglas fir ceiling beams. The straight-grained behemoths measure 8″ by 28″.
