Ed Strong Undergoes Surgery
November 4, 2009 on 1:46 pm | In Mountain Biking | 2 CommentsLocal biking legend Ed Strong underwent brain surgery at OHSU on Tuesday, November 3rd.
A large tumor that was partially removed in 2002 has returned and additional surgery was necessary. Ed’s good friend and biking buddy, Vaughn Martin, said that it is unlikely doctors will be able to remove the entire tumor during this operation.
If you don’t know Ed – shown below at the 2007 TDG – he is not only a sweetheart of a guy but also a true mountain biking pioneer. He and Vaughn have ridden virtually every accessible trail in Southwest Washington and many beyond that.
In addition, Ed was one of the first mountain bikers in this area to raise the bar for technical riding. Back in the 1980s, when Ed was in his late 40s and early 50s, he set the pace by riding big logs at Stella. From that point forward, people began incorporating log rides and overs into their trail work and improving their skill level accordingly.
Even in his late 60s, with limited vision as a result of the 2002 surgery, Ed could still do things on a bike that would make you go, “Huh?”

I have some fond memories of some mountain biking trips with my father at Moab, Utah. We’ve also taken lots of family bike rides with my son Dustin at Fort Stevens State Park, Vernonia and this summer we biked a portion of the Coeur d’Alene trail in Idaho. My father is not only an excellent rider, but he has repaired quite a few bikes for me and my son Dustin. As I was growing up, I went on a lot of adventures with my father that will last in my memories forever. We climbed Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams together. We also did a lot of cross-country skiing at Mt. Hood, Mt Rainier, and Mt. St. Helens before it erupted. He was the kind of father that took time out for his family on weekends and he strongly valued family vacations. He felt that they were very important and so we took family vacations every summer to some new place. I pray for a quick recovery. I love you dad!
