Growlers Work Party Draws Huge Crowd
November 23, 2009 on 2:39 pm | In Mountain Biking | 8 CommentsDespite the wind and rain, 66 people showed to build new trail at Growlers Gulch on November 21st, nearly doubling the total of volunteers at the 2008 event. See photos at the bottom of this post.
We have not charted the mileage yet, but we believe we added 2+ miles to the system as a result of Saturday’s work. The following lines were completed:
- Big climbing trail out of the Secret Garden. Great job with the switchbacks. This one will be called Bitter Bitch.
- Unnamed line at the top of the system between Double Down and the Canoe Trail.
- Four lines of varying lengths at the bottom of the Secret Garden. We are hoping that this will make the Secret Garden area a destination. PMS is going to be a signature trail at Growlers. You will understand when you see the features we added. Two short, unnamed trails – along with Humpity Hump – were also completed at the bottom of the SG.
Thanks so much to everyone who showed. The extraordinary turnout is very hard to explain to people who are not connected to Growlers. (Trust me, this level of participation is unheard of in most places) We just feel lucky to have so many skilled and hard-working people on board for this event.
Please check the list at the bottom of this post. If I have left anyone out or if I have the wrong name for anyone, please let me know.
Your participation entitles you to three perks:
- A GROWLERS sticker for your car or truck. It should be arriving in the mail soon.
- A custom tour of the Growlers trail system. If I can’t handle this myself, I will line you up with one of the other slackers and they will make sure you are taken care of. This coupon is good for you and any friends you want to bring. Please contact me at jim@writeteknorthwest.com or seattle0@hotmail.com (That’s a “zero,” not a small case “o”) or simply leave a comment at the end of this post.
- First-in-line status for all five Growlers events in 2010. In some cases, we like to limit numbers but if you work on trail at Growlers during the eyar, we will always make room for you.

Thanks to everyone that showed up. It was an unbelievable amount of work. I am pretty sure we got 3 total miles of trail. With our small crew before lunch, everyone kicked butt. On PMS and Humpity, the Hansen brothers and company were a big help with their trail building knowledge and skill. These are two awesome trails. The Secret Garden will not be a Secret much longer.

I move we rename bitter bitch to bitchin and change it to a downhill trail.

That would only mean that we’d have to convert the original SG line to an uphill and come up with a nasty name for it.
XC Rule #1: What goes down must go up – even if unpleasantness is involved.

Thank you EVERYONE!! That was amazing. I’m sure we freaked some hunters out. We knocked out some pretty cool stuff. I can’t wait to get wheels on it. Al & Nick you guys are awesome! Crazy but awesome. Thank you.

Showing up to help you guys build and maintain the trails is the least I could do to return the hospitality you have shown me, and others.
Thanks, looking forward to riding what we built…And taking advantage of that custom tour.

Enjoyed working with everyone. What a group! Thanks for the opportunity to help out with such a motivated crew. I’ll be back.

66 people on a trail building day is phenomenal. To give you a bit of perspective, in over 20 trail building sessions we led for IMBA, we had an average of 20 attendees per trail building party.
Northwest Trail Alliance has been having a really hard time getting people to come out for the work parties at Stub Stewart in Vernonia. We only had 3 people come out for the one I was at.
Poor Joe.
