Work Date Set for South Coldwater Trail

January 14, 2010 on 2:01 pm | In Mountain Biking | 5 Comments

We have received phenomenal support from area riders for trail building and trail maintenance at Growlers Gulch. We ask that you expand your horizons a bit and consider signing on to lend a hand with the South Coldwater 230A Trail on Saturday, June 26th. You can sign up in advance or at the Tour de Gulch on June 19th.

The 230A is a unique piece of trail. It was opened by mountain bikers and is maintained by mountain bikers. For the past five years, work parties from Growlers Gulch Racing have taken the lead by making sure the lower three miles are in sterling condition.

This is the only trail on the north side of the mountain that can be easily accessed by mountain bikers. There is a possibility that we might be able to expand trail access on the north side, but that won’t happen unless we show that we are committed to helping with the 230A.

If you haven’t been up there, it’s time. This is unique terrain. Take a look at the vid and photos of the north side at http://writeteknorthwest.com/archives/258/st-helens-ape-canyon-and-mount-margaret. This was from a ride we did at the mountain in 2008 and will give you an appreciation for what we have up there.

Last year’s work party was successful but plagued by controversy, resulting from an illicit over constructed by Thomas “Balloon Boy” Mueller. The Forest Service still hasn’t gotten over it. You can relive this tawdry episode at http://writeteknorthwest.com/archives/1543/u-s-forest-service-issues-warrant-for-thomas-mueller
