Loneys Test Super D Course

Eric and Sam Loney have confirmed that the length of the Super D course is 3.36 miles. The race is still six months away, so it’s obvious that they weren’t practicing. They were simply checking distance for the rest of us.

Eric said the route is perfectly suited to Super D racing, with approximately 80 percent downhill and 20 percent uphill. He predicts that times for the entire run will be in the 15-20 minute range.

Which raises several questions:

  • Is he saying that his time will be in the 15-20 minute range?
  • If that’s the case, what will the average time be for mere mortals?
  • With a chance for decent speed in places and the focus on pushing hard for the full run, what is the likelihood of carnage during that 15-20 minute span?

Here’s the route, with the starting point at the top of Creation and the finish at the bottom of the Secret Garden. I suppose you could ride PMS if you really wanted to stretch yourself.

  • Creation
  • First part of Bad Gravity
  • Upper Jekyll
  • Lower Jekyll
  • All three Lower KMAs
  • Secret Garden

Currently scheduled for September 18, the Super D is one of five events sanctioned by Growlers Gulch Racing during the 2010 ride season. Participation is required for those dreaming of qualifying for Fist of Five status. View complete schedule.

There is a possibility that the date of the Super D may be swapped with the Climbing Championships – currently slated for October 16. Because the October date would put us in hunting season, we would be able to drive to the top of Creation. On the other hand, hunters have been known to fire at moving targets.

The Board of Director has taken this suggestion under advisement and will issue a ruling during the coming months.

  1. Gunfire makes you faster. I think an honorary fist of five should be given to those who wear fuzzy brown jackets and fake antlers during hunting season.

  2. I think earlier is better. I would rather have the Super D with less chance of rain/injuries. And everyone has to get there bike to the top without a truck.
