Brigman Starts Race Season with Two Wins

It’s a familiar refrain, but Lance Brigman never gets tired of hearing it.

Cherry Pie: After picking up titles at seven OBRA events in 2009, Brigman – of Growlers Gulch Racing and Bike Tires Direct – kicked off the new year with a bang, taking first place in the 60+ category at the Cherry Pie Road Race in Corvallis, Oregon, on February 13th. The course covered 26 miles.

After resting for 75 minutes, he went back out on the course and rode with the 50+ open group, finishing 20th and averaging 23 miles per hour over 52 miles.

“I was able to stay with the leaders for most of the way in the second race,” Brigman said. “But my legs were dead at the end.”

Jack Frost: Brigman finished first among 18 riders in the 60+ category at the Jack Frost race in Vancouver on February 21st – but not without a little extra excitement and some proof that mountain biking skills translate to road racing.

Approximately 500 yards from the finish line, a Honda Civic ran Brigman off the road. “I was doing 27 miles per hour,” he said. “I went through the grass and picked up a bike path that I rode for about 100 yards. The race official said, ‘Good save.’ It was like being on a mountain bike with one-inch tires.”

  2. Wasn’t there a Lance that did a little mountain biking on his road bike a few years back in a big race?

I must be thinking of someone else!
