Sam and Eric Loney both participated in the Northwest Cup at Port Angeles on March 27th and 28th. Eric placed 11th among 26 pro’s, while Sam picked up her second win of the season in women’s beginners.

The men’s field included a group of heavy hitters, including Luke Stroebel, Curtis Keene, Phil Wiering, Dean Tennant, and Bryn Atkinson.

Atkinson rolled to the win in 3:06.72, 1.66 seconds ahead of Tennant. Eric was part of a tightly-bunched group that finished from 3:11 to 3:20.

GGG’s Sam Loney

Despite riding in difficult conditions, Sam easily outdistanced her closest competitor by 25 seconds to take top spot on the women’s podium.

“The track suprised me,” she said. ”I wouldn’t send a beginner down that trail without them having some riding skills. There were rocks galore. Not at all what I’m used to.”

A Saturday night downpour made the track especially dicey, but Sam racked up her fastest run on Sunday.

“I almost crashed hard going over an angled rock slab. I was leaned way too far forward and had just my front tire touching. Luckily, I let off on my brakes and my back tire went back down.”

Project 529′s newest member, Kole Weatherall, 15, from Clatskanie, finished 11th in the tough junior expert division. Eric predicts that Kole will be a force to be reckoned with as the season goes on.
