McMaster Wins 5K Title
May 23, 2010 on 3:03 am | In Mountain Biking | 10 CommentsRyan McMaster of Growlers Gulch Racing hammered a strong field as he cruised to an easy victory in the Growlers Gulch 5,000 on May 22nd. The 2010 5K was sponsored by the great beer people at Belmont Station.
In an incredible tribute to the this year’s riders, every person who signed up completed the entire route. And it wasn’t easy.
Despite sketchy conditions, McMaster racked up a time of 3:19 to finish 12 minutes ahead of Brent Wallace (3:31). Cage Aaron (3:36), 2009 5K champ Mike Van Hoose (3:38), and Bob Stanton (3:40) rounded out the top five.
In addition to those five, Eric Loney, Darrell Jamieson, Joel Rogauskus, Chase Bryant, and Lance Brigman completed the 27.1-mile ride, which included 5,000 feet of climbing, in under four hours.
In the women’s division, Susan Martin (4:29) edged Denise Livingston (4:30) in the closest 5K finish on record. Martin picked up her fifth consecutive GG5K crown.
McMaster reached the support station at the top of Bitter Bitch in a blistering 36 minutes to establish a two-minute lead on Wallace (:38). Stanton was third (:39), followed by Aaron (:40), Jamieson (:41), Loney (:41), and Van Hoose (:42). McMaster’s time to the top of the 313 hill to close Leg #1 was :50.
The second time past the support station had McMaster opening his lead over Wallace to six minutes, with Aaron nine minutes back, followed by Stanton and Van Hoose at eleven and thirteen back respectively.

General stuff: Rob Larsen, Susan Martin, J. LeMonds and D. LeMonds are the only riders to have completed all five GG5Ks . . . Marcus Faber, Sam Brickey, Bob Horness, Juntu Oberg, Sam Loney, Tonya Breedlove, Carol Mathre, Chase Bryant, Jerry de Ruyter, Brent Wallace, Derek Zipprich, and Darrell Jamieson were competing in their first 5K . . . The winners’ cups shown in the photos were made specially for the GG5K by ceramicist Dara Muldoon . . . Bob Stanton, Joel Rogauskus, Aaron Althaeuser, Ken Pearson, and Chase Bryant completed the ride on single-speeds . . . A record eight women – Martin, Livingston, Muldoon, Melanie Norris, Juntu Oberg, Samantha Loney, Tonya Breedlove, and Carol Mathre – completed the 5K . . . After finishing three legs of the ride in 2009, PNW biking legend Vaughn Martin, 72, finished the entire 5K this year. Not sure what this means? Take your current age. Subtract from 72. Ask yourself if you will be getting on a bike and doing a 27.1-mile ride with 5,000 feet of elevation gain after that many more years.
Kudos to Belmont Station for sponsoring this year’s 5K. Belmont donated a generous helping of quality beers from their enormous stock. If you get a chance to stop in, tell them that you rode the 5K and appreciate their support.

What a great race, wish I remembered more of it. Loading up the gps track give the following:
Climbing – 6100 feet (DEM model, 5500′ straight gps)
distance – 24.6 miles
I mostly remember the cowbell at the aid station, that helped me get going again.
Ryan really stepped up this year and showed that his hard work payed off(Nice to have a local win also). thanks to all the volunteers and photographers and especially Jeep for putting up with us

I too enjoyed the cow bells and supportive cheering ( and a beer at each stop – thanks, Al and Ryan ) from the aid station. An awesome day riding with special people.
