Growlers Crew Assists with Ape Canyon Clean-up
August 4, 2008 on 3:45 pm | In Mt. Biking |Seventeen volunteers participated in a bottom-to-top clean-up of the Ape Canyon Trail at Mount St. Helens on Sunday, August 3rd. The weather was great and everyone - including four first-timers - made it to the top.
The event was sponsored by Boone Dog Bikes, MOPI, PUMP, and the Tour de Gulch Board of Directors. Four PUMP members showed up; the other 13 volunteer were from the Growlers Gulch ride crew.
A similar project completed in 2007 took care of nearly all the logs that were down near the bottom of the trail. This year’s focus was on trimming back brush, digging in water bars, and taking care of a few nasty roots.
Growlers participants included Jason Moon, Todd Schierscher, Kevin Knorr, Mike Van Hoose, Denise Vernon, Brian Mahon, J. LeMonds, Paul Norris, Melanie Norris, Mel’s daughter Averie, Thomas Mueller, Ksenia (k-ZEN) Mueller, and Darrell Cox.
Because the Forest Service has no money for trail work these days, it is becoming increasingly important for mountain bikers to step up and make a contribution. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Went up and rode out to the ladders. Again great trail work. George had a blast and is now calling Ape Cyn. his favorite NW ride. We started early Saturday am in the rain and fog. (Of course no one else was at the trail head) Within 1.5 miles up the trail the weather lifted and we had the perfect window for a ride. Lot s of flowers, great tread.
