Break Out the Black Arm Bands
August 20, 2010 on 3:54 am | In Mountain Biking | 12 CommentsWell, we knew it was coming.
Weyerhaeuser has had the lower trails at Growlers ribboned and prepped for logging for more than a year. Based on feedback from one of our good Weyco sources, cutting will commence within the next few weeks.
It’s going to take some time to get through the grieving process, so if you need to buy tequila do it now.
I’m guessing this will wipe out all the lower trails – Mr. T, Predator, Terminator, Beauty, Belly, Frosty Balls, Trail of Tears, Walk in the Park, Alley Oop, New Guy, Eddie, No Problem, Carnage, Piece, Pound, Cooley’s, Lung Buster, the Creek Trail, and all the Road Trails.
It’s going to take some time to get the system back up to 30+ miles but I’m optimistic that it can be done. I guarantee that we will be scoping things as soon as the logging is completed.
I’m hopeful that we will still be able to run the Super D and the Climbing Championships, but there is no way to be certain until I have a chance to assess the extent of the damage.
I will keep you in the loop as things progress.

How will access to the upper trails be…I assume all the roads will be closed

They usually don’t close the roads while logging is underway unless timber is being cut right next to the road. Should be open on weekends in most cases.

Sux, I like to ride em one last time and count me in on building new trials.

Oops, I mean trails not trials.

You know, several times I have seen a “Spotted Owl” while looking up and riding aroung. I think they need to do a study for —let’s say 15yrs?

At least it will keep the horses out……

Ha ha ha, I like your thinking Paul!!! But it still sucks! After they are done though, we will be able to build there again, and we can probably see the terrain a little better, so maybe we can build even better trails??? Trying to think possitive.

I’ve always been proud to be a northwest lumberjack. The smell of cedar in my flannel, and mink oil on my caulks. Dodging bar-closing traffic on my way to work. Generations of building rain tolerant blood to flow in my vains. But today I hang my head in shame, rethinking my entire existence. Now I have to buy a prius and a bike rack so my work truck doesn’t get egged at the trailhead.
