Three Rivers Cycling Club Crashes and Burns at Growlers
April 28, 2009 on 2:39 pm | In Mountain Biking | 11 CommentsHopefully, they got it out of their systems.
It all started innocently enough. The Three Rivers Cycling Club showed up Saturday to fine-tune themselves and their equipment in preparation for next weekend’s Growlers Gulch 5,000. By the end of the day, they were left with broken bike parts and no way home.
TRC newcomer Ryan McMaster managed to lose his keys somewhere on the trail system and was scrambling for a ride home to search for the spare set. McMaster – who had previously signed on for the 5K, then dropped off the list, and is now back on – remains hopeful that someone will spot the keys and return them.
The chance of a GG5K rider running across the keys is less than 10 percent.
The chance of a GG5K rider stopping to pick them up is zero.
Mike Van Hoose, who has been tabbed as one of the pre-ride favorites, was breaking in the Niner EMD he put together specifically for the upcoming race/ride.
He broke it in all right, hammering the poor bike into a log-over on Cousin Eddy and tatering his seat, which he removed to finish the ride.
In what can only be characterized as a rash and compassionless gesture, Dave LeMonds suggested that Van Hoose was merely trying to cut weight on a bike that was already criminally light. LeMonds immediately called for a ruling by the TDG Board of Directors.
Three Rivers Cycling guru Richard Haight, who has vowed to actually follow the ride route this year, was last seen getting into his car for an emergency trip to Portland in search of a new bike.
Well-known for his smooth navigation of obstacles large and small, Haight had complained throughout Saturday’s ride that his Gary Fisher Hi-Fi was making “a bad sound.”
That will happen when your frame is tatered.

You know you ride with a bunch of ruthless riders when you know the chances of someone stopping to pick up your keys is Zero. I wonder what the chances of GG5K rider stopping to help someone who is hurt or bike damaged?…probably also zero.

Get real, Ride Master. We’re talking less-than-zero. If you want love, buy a dog.

I broke my rig frame on my last ride out there. Hope the new one comes in time for the 5k.

And you all wonder why I plan my back country trips during the 5K.

What is this Three Rivers Cycling Club ? Is it some OUTLAW biker gang.
Comment by Rob — May 3, 2009 #
Denise is a former member. She said it’s not an outlaw gang, but that it should be outlawed.

Hello all, wondering why i was not out there saturday, well it is not even funny, but my frame broke in a similar location like the picture above. Since mine is steel and made no noise and is corroded it is unsure since when I had the crack. I saved what is left for next weekend. As a new bike is no option and the replacement rear triangle will not be here in time. I did talk to a good welder though. Still, there is a chance i will be slower on the downhill or dont make it at all. Will see. Thomas

Don’t look now but Jim LeMonds is sneaking into the top 10 predicted finishers in the 5k…I’ll need 20 more broken frames to break into the top 10. Break into…get it.
