Lance, T-shirts, Women, Smitty, Trail

So much news. So little space.

Lance rides. Mel organizes another women’s ride. Old dudes hack away on new trail lines at Growlers. Still a chance for you to purchase one of the few remaining t-shirts. And don’t forget to reserve space on your calendar for the Growlers Gulch TT on September 20th.

Boone Dog Bikes Organizes Raffles to Benefit Guy Smith - Biking brother Guy Smith has had a string of luck that is about as bad as it can get. Last year, Smitty missed a ton of work as the result of a severe bike crash. Not long after he’d recovered, doctors discovered big-time arterial blockage and did emergency heart surgery. We’re lucky he’s still with us.

Smitty has no sick days left and is still off work. He is the sole provider for a large extended family. Jason Moon at Boone Dog Bikes is organizing two raffles - one for a Chris King headset, the other for XC tires - to run until Guy returns to work. If you have a few extra bucks, please be generous. You can give the money to Jason the next time you are in the shop. Price is $5 for the tire raffle and $10 for the CK raffle. Do the right thing - just chip in $20.

Mel Reports on Women’s Ride - Mel Norris organized the second all-women’s ride at Growlers on August 23. Seven riders participated, including newbie Sarah Carlson. A source that asked to remain anonymous reported that Carlson filled her pack with juice boxes, rather than the traditional sports drink.

Lance Rides - Lance Brigman of the Growlers Gulch Cycling Team finished second in his classification in the OBRA Hill Climbing Championships at Government Camp on August 24. The ride gained 2,000 feet over 5.6 miles. Brigman finished in 33 minutes and 57 seconds.

T-Shirts - T-shirts are in and can be picked up at Boone Dog Bikes. Jason ordered four extras for anyone who is still interested. Sizes are limited. Let Jason or me know ASAP if you want one.

Old Dudes - We have completed about .70 of a new line just off the end of the Railroad Grade and are working to ride it in. Neat terrain. Trail is currently unnamed. We have about another .3 to add.

Just to the west, Dave, Jack and I have been marking out a great new line that will probably be .7 to 1.0. I’ll let you know when it’s ready to be limbed.

Becky Berry Returns - After a lengthy hiatus, Becky Berry returned to Growlers in mid-August for a ride. In the past year or two, Berry has tried to convince herself - to no avail - that she is a roadie. We are glad to have her back in the fold and look forward to many great rides together, especially during the winter months, which are more to her liking.

  1. I tried to ignore the juice box allegations, but I can hold my tongue no longer. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. :)
