Props to Travis D! You finished! The thing that seperates GGR from other MTB communities is the inclusive atmosphere and the fact that when newbies show up they are treated with equal parts of respect and mentorship. Can’t top that! Wish I coulda been there.

So, my strategy for next year’s 5k will be one of the following: move all the pink ribbons to different trails, recruit someone that rides slower than me – if that’s possible, join Team Fajardo. Seriously, thank you all for your support. The GG’rs are truly a special group, and I couldn’t have done it without your encouragement.

Much appreciation to Bob, Joel, Brian, Jeep, and everyone who helped set up flagging, the aid station, posting results, pictures, etc. For my 1st 5K it was a heck of a lot of work and yet actually fun also but then I am a bit masochistic. Jeep knew that or he wouldn’t have wasted his time on subjecting me to the leveraging challenge during an early post. Thanks Jeep, it was a great way to get the lead out for later winter and early spring riding. Oh and thanks to whomever kept up the good weather chant just long enough. The trails were awesome!

Big THANKS to Bob. I don’t think I could have finshed with out his help. I drank tons of water up to the event but ignored the “Board of Director’s message about Endurolytes!” Which trust me WILL NOT HAPPEN again. I will also get my butt on a bike more then 1 time with in the last 3 months. I am just glad I finshed. The event was awesome and am looking forword to next years race when I will get in the mid 3 hr range.

I see there is NO respect for the Portland ‘wild card’ rider from NWTA. Was not even listed as participant racking up a fourth place finish with 3:35. This is definitely a great group of people. The amount of volunteering is outstanding and honorable. I appreciate how much hard work is put into the trails and bike park when I volunteer myself or I ride another trail that doesn’t have the same stewardship as Growlers.
I am available on August 4th for whatever needs to be done for the women’s skill camp. Please keep me in mind and posted.

I don’t think we ever thought much about expanding just to get bigger numbers. We’ve always enjoyed bringing people out and sharing the trails. In the last few years, we’ve realized how big our network is and how much we can accomplish if we utilize our resources. It’s a unique situation.

Congratulations GG Racing and everyone at GG.

Today on the rear of a bus I saw a sign encouraging people to live a healthy lifestyle and exercise in Multnomah County, and I thought, if Multnomah County really cared they would do more to promote mountain biking, a form of recreation that brings joy and health. Instead Forest Park trails are closed to us, as the hikers do not want to share ANY OF THE TRAILS. Saturday I took my granddaughter to the Pump track that our club NWTA recently built and I was delighted to see moms and dads and kids, whole families playing on that LITTLE bike track. Castle Rock, a small community is exemplifying what we badly need in Multnomah County.

Keep it up and perhaps other cities will learn from you.

I was a victim of ‘scientific” circumstance!! As we all know the Sun spot activity, (sun storms this last week) were focused toward Terry-Taylor streets of Longview, these electrical and magnetic waves caused havoc with my clocks and my personal circadian rhythms – so I should be commended for showing up!! If you need to get after people, what about those guys who ate 3/4ths to a full chicken – some were using the hot chickens for a hand warmer!!! Mike P

I received a personal request to participate with a pointed note about how it will be perfect timing for my getting back in riding shape. I fear this is poor decision making on my part, as I may perish from the effort or get hopelessly lost…I suffer no illusions of my ability to ride someone’s wheel…but go ahead and add me to the list of people dumb enough. I’ll do my best to get riding again, then riding trails, then riding the route when the GGG’s are kind enough to put up with me.

Regarding the “Trail Poachers” it seems like “Bob” clearly forgot to mention that the group of “slackers” that he referred to actually stopped to help him and his friend clear the main road of several of the larger trees that had blown down. As for not having any camp saws with us…I didn’t hear any complaints when I borrowed his girlfriend’s saw to help him cut and clear several of the larger logs.

It is everyone’s responsibility to do their part. However it’s unrealistic to expect that one has a right to hijack another group’s ride without advanced planning or notice. We didn’t realize that having a camp saw with us at all times was a requirement to ride. Perhaps spot checks for all the proper equipment at the gate are in order.

Just to be clear, concise, and correct, we did stop and help, and we continued on with our ride.

Thanks Chris (and Tom). Jeff and I headed down the Jeep Trail to the Creek Trail Saturday after putting up the silt fence at the Bike Park. We cut the major stuff we couldn’t ride around. Could see where someone (you) had started sawing on the clump of maple tops. It took us 30 minutes or more to clear it…lots of pieces. Other than that it wasn’t bad.

Kudos to everyone who cut, hacked and cleaned trail this past several days.

I dragged Tom Eilertsen along with me on both Friday and Saturday to man the hand saw and rescue me when I wore myself out on Creekside (sadly it doesn’t take much). Thanks to whoever it was that finished what I started – I just ran out of gas and time. Anyway, Tom has been doing his part and more to clean up any debris he runs into.

Yes I think we did. We did the gateway trail but by the time we reached the summit the weather had turned cold and damp. Yes in Az. We turned around and headed down. Very steep hike a bike toward the top of the summit. I have to review my video but that is probably the next ride report I will be doing. I did make a video of that ride…

I was running slime tubes (did pick up a cactus thorn but didn’t get a flat). Paul was running tubeless. I was running Nevagals (I took six month off the life of the tire in two weeks). Paul started with Nevagals but ended up with one Nevagal on the front and I think a slant six or some other low profile on the back. A lot of the riders in Az were running Nevagals. Also as a point of interest, the ratio of flat pedal riders to clipless was inverse to what it is here. I saw a lot of flat pedals… one more point of interest, at least to me, I ran across another rider that was running the inverse break set up like I do. Large rotor in the back, we both felt it gives much better control on steep descents.

Great riding up there, tons of fun.

Props to everyone that helped build A-Bomb. Great end on the day ride.

We ran into a few issues in the snow. #1 Our rather spikey flat pedals would ice over every trail or so, we had to use sticks to clear them out. Non stick cooking spray may help keep them clear. #2 The rear derailuer and cassettes also got iced up, so you may want to spray them down as well.

#3 Bring lights just in case. I left the lights on in my Jeep & we had to ride out to Delameter to get a ride. We were out until 6:30. After 5 hours of riding it was dark & wet & cold. Wish I had a pair of warm socks, gloves and dry shoes.

#4 The next day when we went to jump start the Jeep, the forest roads were still quite snowy, but it was wet snow. That wet snow packed down to ice after 1 pass. We almost lost a rig over the cliff while trying ot turn around. Luckily we had tow straps and Nicks rather capable Jeep to save teh day. So park accordingly and keep a shovel & recovery gear in the car just in case.
