I received a personal request to participate with a pointed note about how it will be perfect timing for my getting back in riding shape. I fear this is poor decision making on my part, as I may perish from the effort or get hopelessly lost…I suffer no illusions of my ability to ride someone’s wheel…but go ahead and add me to the list of people dumb enough. I’ll do my best to get riding again, then riding trails, then riding the route when the GGG’s are kind enough to put up with me.

Ray : I’m sorry you assumed I was talking of your group, Jeep should have put in that I ran into the group on Sunday and they were all from Portland. As for you and your group, yes, thank you very much for helping on the road. That was some heavy logs you guys were able to slide out of the way.
I’m not going to respond to the rest of your comments as that could only perpetuate bad feelings when there shouldn’t be any in the first place.

Jeep, sign me up! I’m shooting for at least 2 laps, maybe 3, (or maybe 4). Though if we climb Creation there are some VERY intense sections that have leg cramps written all over them.

Regarding the “Trail Poachers” it seems like “Bob” clearly forgot to mention that the group of “slackers” that he referred to actually stopped to help him and his friend clear the main road of several of the larger trees that had blown down. As for not having any camp saws with us…I didn’t hear any complaints when I borrowed his girlfriend’s saw to help him cut and clear several of the larger logs.

It is everyone’s responsibility to do their part. However it’s unrealistic to expect that one has a right to hijack another group’s ride without advanced planning or notice. We didn’t realize that having a camp saw with us at all times was a requirement to ride. Perhaps spot checks for all the proper equipment at the gate are in order.

Just to be clear, concise, and correct, we did stop and help, and we continued on with our ride.

Thanks Chris (and Tom). Jeff and I headed down the Jeep Trail to the Creek Trail Saturday after putting up the silt fence at the Bike Park. We cut the major stuff we couldn’t ride around. Could see where someone (you) had started sawing on the clump of maple tops. It took us 30 minutes or more to clear it…lots of pieces. Other than that it wasn’t bad.

Kudos to everyone who cut, hacked and cleaned trail this past several days.

I dragged Tom Eilertsen along with me on both Friday and Saturday to man the hand saw and rescue me when I wore myself out on Creekside (sadly it doesn’t take much). Thanks to whoever it was that finished what I started – I just ran out of gas and time. Anyway, Tom has been doing his part and more to clean up any debris he runs into.

Yes I think we did. We did the gateway trail but by the time we reached the summit the weather had turned cold and damp. Yes in Az. We turned around and headed down. Very steep hike a bike toward the top of the summit. I have to review my video but that is probably the next ride report I will be doing. I did make a video of that ride…

I was running slime tubes (did pick up a cactus thorn but didn’t get a flat). Paul was running tubeless. I was running Nevagals (I took six month off the life of the tire in two weeks). Paul started with Nevagals but ended up with one Nevagal on the front and I think a slant six or some other low profile on the back. A lot of the riders in Az were running Nevagals. Also as a point of interest, the ratio of flat pedal riders to clipless was inverse to what it is here. I saw a lot of flat pedals… one more point of interest, at least to me, I ran across another rider that was running the inverse break set up like I do. Large rotor in the back, we both felt it gives much better control on steep descents.

Paul that trails looks a lot like Fruita trail known as More Fun. I wish that had been in Phoenix when I rode there 20 years ago. Well 20 years agoe that would have been too hard for me.

Great riding up there, tons of fun.

Props to everyone that helped build A-Bomb. Great end on the day ride.

We ran into a few issues in the snow. #1 Our rather spikey flat pedals would ice over every trail or so, we had to use sticks to clear them out. Non stick cooking spray may help keep them clear. #2 The rear derailuer and cassettes also got iced up, so you may want to spray them down as well.

#3 Bring lights just in case. I left the lights on in my Jeep & we had to ride out to Delameter to get a ride. We were out until 6:30. After 5 hours of riding it was dark & wet & cold. Wish I had a pair of warm socks, gloves and dry shoes.

#4 The next day when we went to jump start the Jeep, the forest roads were still quite snowy, but it was wet snow. That wet snow packed down to ice after 1 pass. We almost lost a rig over the cliff while trying ot turn around. Luckily we had tow straps and Nicks rather capable Jeep to save teh day. So park accordingly and keep a shovel & recovery gear in the car just in case.

(I was one of the guys in red) A-Bomb is a great ‘technical downhill’. There’s 2-3 spots where you need good momentum to carry you over the next rise, but as the trail settles in over time and seasons, those should be crankable, too.

Travis, there are a few vegetarians in the group. I made a vegan chili last year and I think there were 4 or 5 takers. Don’t know how you handle that with chowder. Maybe corn chowder? Andrew Holder is allergic to dairy and some other things. He is used to bringing his own, but, I am sure he will enjoy the bread.

We always have a hard time reading theses posts. Seeing the amount of people that are involved and the progress that is being made not only at Growlers but the bike park to is awesome. Coming from the south, take Exit 48. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp onto Huntington Avenue. Go about a mile or so until the speed changes to 25. Take left and then bear left again onto Dike Road. Go about .75. You’ll see the bike park on the left. Bring gloves. We love new workers.

So sorry to hear of this. S— happens in a hurry! At least you walked away and can still heal up to ride another day. I did something similar to my clavicle with a partial separation in the past. When you get there do the painful stretching and therapy. It’s damn well worth it. Been 15 years and I don’t notice a thing. Good luck!

Ryan sorrry man.
Carlas dad did the same thing and was able to ride again. I cant remember how long it took to recover.
There are some surgeries available but none that are real good. The question to ask the ortho doc is “if this was you what would you do”
Sound like roadie riding is more dangerous than mtb.

Strong work boys!
Carla and I always carry some aspirin (not motrin or tylenol) for just such an occasion in our packs. Aspirin is one of a 4 pronged treatment for MI.
The other 3 prongs are difficult to carry on a bike. This could be a reason to carry a cellphone and definitely a reason to not ride alone!

Heart attack protocol in woods
1. call 911
2. take one aspirin if not allergic
3. get to ambulance extraction spot
4. HOPE other riders know Basic Life Support till ambulance shows up.

Maybe Brad, Carla, and Lance could teach an unofficial class of Basic Life Support for those interested. Might save someone (me)?

Dara almost ran a deer down on her night lap.
I took a lap at the end of the race to see what kind of torture they went through. It took me just over two hours and large portions of the course were like riding on a washboard road.
