Count me in, not because I want to race I’m too hung over on any given Sat. to do more than just ride and I carry too much extra liver weight to ever be competitve, but I sure did enjoy watchin the pain and sufferin last year, grown men rollin around on the ground in the middle of the trail. I don’t think everyone realizes that Uncle Ed has the equipment at his house to haul away large vehicles and crush them into landfill or possibly ocean reefs. Park in his driveway at your own risk. Better yet, just leave lots of room.

Plus it is one of those trails that has a nice scenic, not too painful, but long up up up up and up. Then you get to turn back down and go through all the nice fast switchy stuff! If you have a very much XC oriented bike, it is a ton of fun!

Took my Giant OCR to Highlander’s today for a shifter upgrade and general tune-up. Scott and Janice are super-friendly and more than helpful. Scott listened to my concerns and readily came up with an excellent solution. It’s clear that this team loves biking and knows their stuff! And, my, those Kona bikes are lovely! I’m sure I’ll be back again and again. So glad you’ve come to town!

I’m ok. I think the shorts will be fine. The trail was perfectly safe, me riding without my shinguards was the issue oh yeah and there’s the ongoing problem I have with hitting trees.
BTW Growlers broke me, The Spike only scratched me a little…The Spike is definitely a must ride, a lot of hard work was put in over there and it really shows.

I also have a great supporter in my brother who keeps challenges lined out for me. And Vaughn, you are a truly an amazing rider and give me hope to ride for many more years.

Aaron mentioned Norm’s trails being destroyed by storms in the last few years. Those trails were badly damaged, however due to Norm now living in Washington, those trails don’t see the regular maintenance that they once received. I believe that land is still fair game for trail building if anyone would like to reopen a set of really fun trails.

I’ve ridden the Knappa trails, not really made for the 29er hardtail but perfect for the rider who wants to get a little more air time. Word of caution, the trails are slick as snot when wet (which is most of the time). I used to ride Norm’s Trails pretty frequently a few years ago, there was a wicked fun teeter toter on it and some great singletrack. Better yet it was all mapped (with maps at the trailhead) and signs on the trails so getting lost was a challenge…though I still managed to do it. Sadly as the pictures show on the I Hate Bikes page…those trails are destroyed due to the major storm a couple years back.

Stopped by last week, looks very promising. Having previous bike shop experience (8 years) I compliment you on your choice of Kona and KHS. Kona being a PNW based company that makes a great product and KHS is a highly under rated product.

One thing I would like to see as a bicycle enthusiast who is also an environmental health specialist is promotion of renewable resource products. Namely lubricants and cleaners that are washed off our chains and are introduced into our rivers, streams, and lakes. Pedros sells bio chain oil, bearing grease, and solvents. I don’t know if they offer their chain oil in bulk but offering a refill service would be very eco friendly as well.

Would like to get a helmet for one of the girls, but need some advice on size:

I see adult sizes, and youth 8-14. Do they have adult sized heads or something closer to what a 8 year old would have? I always had a big noggin and no 14 year olds so have no real good benchmark.

66 people on a trail building day is phenomenal. To give you a bit of perspective, in over 20 trail building sessions we led for IMBA, we had an average of 20 attendees per trail building party.

Northwest Trail Alliance has been having a really hard time getting people to come out for the work parties at Stub Stewart in Vernonia. We only had 3 people come out for the one I was at.

A best practice in trail design for rough flagging a trail corridor is to always place flagging at eye height. I like to place a flag every 20-40 feet or so- if people are having a hard time finding the flag line, they end up having to wander around. Since designing a trail takes almost as much time as building it in the northwest (we’re lucky with that one) it can maximize productivity. Flagging at eye height is easy to see, and makes it easy to check and measure slope. (assuming you were to carry and utilize and inclinometer for trail design)

I realize that your trail designers don’t place pin flags- it can be time consuming, but it can go a long ways as well. A lot of groups skip this step, but it can be a good way to really define the line.

There is a lot of good information in the Forest Service Manual, (free, yay) or IMBA’s Trail Solutions Book.

Thanks to everyone that showed up. It was an unbelievable amount of work. I am pretty sure we got 3 total miles of trail. With our small crew before lunch, everyone kicked butt. On PMS and Humpity, the Hansen brothers and company were a big help with their trail building knowledge and skill. These are two awesome trails. The Secret Garden will not be a Secret much longer.
